Castle Poker is broken!!
The story behind Castle poker is pretty simple. I took a buddy artis sailing years ago and she had a standard deck of cards she'd designed. Whith her beautiful art on royal cards. She'd been selling them at maker fairs. I was all, I need to design you a game to go with your art! In the end she did not like my game much, but folk in our gaming club did. In fact on the day I had them test it, they came back to me an hour later and wanted to try it again. So some years later whe I wanted to explore the idea of getting a game printed in china, it felt like an obvious chioce.
My hand made prototype had goten plenty of plays in the between time, so I felt like this was a pretty safe bet. So check out this video to see where i may have gone wrong..

Should I break monopoly more
There's a sad fact everybody who loves board games needs to face all too regularly. That moment when someone - WHO KNOWS NOTHING - says "Oh, you mean like Monopoly?". We all know it's not the only board game on earth and we wish they did too. Worse, this game is cringe worthy broken, also mean. You can see them judging you as you stand there feeling like a nerd. Well lets have at them with some rules to break Monopoly more. We'll make it meaner while were at it. If you're going to make your little brother cry at the End Of Year Family Festivities, let's make it more significant that a few sobby tears.
May I present to you, partymeeple Monopoly House Rules.

Bad Bingo + Booze

Small bar, Henry on 8th in Maylands, is hosting partymeeple (me n friends) for a gaming night. It's going to be a sort of roll and write thing.. ..but hopefully I've not made it too complicated for people who still think Monopoly is a game? I guess time will tell. I'm quite nervous about this actually.
But here's how it will work. I've designed a booze based roll n write. I'll roll the bones and call out the numbers bingo style. The punters get to write them in the boxes on their game sheet. When boxes are in rows, the numbers need to assend in order. As you fill each row, you score points. Great!!

There's actually prizes too. If you'd like to play along at home, on another day, you can download a PDF of the game sheet here. You'll need two die, one being red (or any colour I guess?) and a scribbling thing for each player.

Those Hidden Bargains

Every year the Western Australian Board gaming Association - WABA - holds a Decembacon thing. It's almost certainly the most well attended thing they run each year. There are tournaments and a 2nd hand game auction. This year, we added an absolute gem to our collection for only ONE DOLLAR!.
It's such a fabulous game that I've used it as the topic for my latest partymeeple video over on YouTube. That aside, many a collector regularly sell off parts of their game collection to make room more for new stuff. The cult of the new is strong in board gaming, and this is great news for those of us that only want a great game and do not care if it's the latest thing or not. I'll often look though charity shops in the toys area for cool old games. It's rare that I find something, but the search is fun. And obviously there's fleeBay etc. But I think we probably buy 4-5 games every year of friends in WABA. If you're in Australia and are looking for (usualy) fairly priced second hand games? Click here and you can see what's for sale. At the time of posting there was more than 120 games up for grabs. You'll need a Board Game Geek account to message the seller, but BGG is data respectful and do not SPAM you. So you can sign up with confidence.

It's time for Drinks

A bloke in a truck pulled up and unloaded a pallet of little boxes. that contained "littler" boxes that were 60 Second Cocktail. I had the idea for 60 Second cocktail at a buddies birthday party where we were all playing Skulls and Roses. Skulls and Roses is a very cool bluffing game. While we played I wondered if I could expand upon the idea? Using an accumulation of time where you bid but also pushed your luck. Initially players found away to break the game (by bidding all cards early), but by tweaking the times, I came up with a way for the rest of the table to trap players that did this..
this was the point where I started thinking about publishing it.

..do you play all those games??!!

We at the Skymeeple, have a pretty handy board game collection. It surprises visitors who don't understand the hobby. They inevitably ask us "do you play all those games?". In this pair of videos I talk about all the games we have in our collection that we've played 20 or more times. I also comment on how beginner suitable I think they are.
Why not click on part one and see what you think?

The Buck150 Thing
(a writing challenge)

It's been a long time since I've posted some news. Did anybody miss me? Well please accept my apologies if you did. Truth is I've been working on a little boat and making video content for that on my personal channel. It's not very gamey (it's a word) so you've not seen a link to a video here. Though it's given me an idea for my next print n play project. A game that fits in a bag, that's a yacht race around the world. But that's not the point of this post.
https://twitter.com/PonchoRebound

A gamer bloke I follow on Twitter has issued a writing challenge. November is NaNoWriMo and writers are supposed to pen 1500 words a day for the whole month. Mr Poncho Rebound (some fabric I follow on twitter) says "hold up, how's about 150 per day". Now that's something someone who failed high school English (me) can have a reasonable crack at. So please click this link here to follow along.
As days pass I think you'll' see a story pertinent to a larger internet push that is on at the moment. Every day the file will have another +150 (or slightly more) words for you to read. Do it over breakfast and we'll call it a serial.

Making Money

I recently got 1822. It's a monster railway game that, so the box claims, takes 5-7 hours to play. You operate various railway companies and trade their stock. However it does not come with money. This is because monopoly style paper money actually sucks. It's messy on the table and awkward to handle. Most 18xx players (1822 is actually one game in a whole genre) play with custom poker chips for money
But what if you do not want to buy poker chips. Well you can craft some your self. Download my free "money token" art from THIS LINK. Print it on to A4 adhesive labels and put that on both sides of some stiff card. Cut them out with a craft knife and you have money for 18xx (or any game really).

I'll Sort You

I needed a little project. Actually I needed a reason to make a video as well. So here are some little DIY game bits trays for you to try. You won't need to spend loads of $$$ and you'll have made them your self. If you're having trouble keeping your bits organised while you're gaming, why not make some of these?
You don't need many tools and the outlines to the trays can be downloaded from THIS LINK.
This is designed to be a good beginner craft project. You only need some pretty basic tools, PVA and some MDF.
Watch the video for the how too.

Shitty Corporates

One of the publishers of Jaipur has decided to ask that the free to play app on Yucata.de (and Board Game Arena I think) be removed. Will leaving the app' up really cost therm significant sales? I discus this in this video (also with a bonus tee offer)..

Hug all the Friends

Wonderfully fond moments in gaming (and a free tee-shirt)

Quins from Shut Up & Sit Down, a board gaming site and YouTube channel, posted a very touching video about one of his favourite board gaming memories. In that video he asks other gamer folk about theirs. Here's a video that describes one of my most memorable moments and a new friend I made at that time.

Here's a link to the SU & SD video. It's a wonderful example of why board games are such a great thing to share with your friends.

Your Bag Man

Somebody on twitter commented that it would be nice to be able to make bags if you knew how. It's pretty easy and i was making some new bags for Trains on a Train, so here's a how too video that will hopefully inspire you to borrow a sewing machine and have a go at this. Crafting print and play games can be very rewarding and there's some great titles out there. Free for you to download, print out and try

Click here for a very long list of free to print and play games on Board Game Geek. There is sure to be something that piques your interest.

I actually tried to find the tweet from last week so I could send who ever it was a shout out. But I had not luck. Something for which I'm quite sorry.

Tips for making PnP cards and tiles.

I, Andrew, have been designing and making board games since my teens. My high school year 9 maths project was actually a board game. It looked pretty cute but was really just a bad re-hash of chess with tanks and soldiers. One of the things you need to learn if you want to design your own games is how to make a prototype you can play test. then make that same prototype 5, 8, 20 more times with all the edits you need to make to try (maybe) get it working.

It's no surprise then, that over all those years (and screwed up paper and card) I have developed a few skills to share with those who'd like to print and play free games. In this video I show how I make double sided tiles and cards. Boardgamegeek.com has a list of over 800 games that are free to print and play. some require major production. Others you print just a few components, find some tokens or dice and off you go. Click on that link to see.

I really hope this video will inspire you to try crafting a print n play game.

The Gamer abode has a new game table.

The partymeeple game shelter has, for many years, suffered with rain water as an unwanted guest. this has been particularly hard on the game shelter's ceilings. So we finally decided to buy a ladder and address the problem. As the task required a bit of surgery. We had quite a bit timber left over. Given my self isolation, I decided it was time for a new table for games.

With the exception of the base board, all the timber is recycled from the roof. curved sides give extra real estate in the centre. Splayed legs mean corner legs do not trap the player on the end when you have extra gamers around the table. With the dining top on, we can seat 10 for a meal/party.

I enjoyed the project and am thinking about costing it up and offering others as a bespoke, hand made, item for those who'd like something that does not just pop out of a set of jigs or a CNC machine?

Small coffee table for a gamer friend.

With the COVID-19 thing being a concern. I decided to do my bit and self isolate. I doubt I'm at very much risk if I catch it. But I'd hate to be an "infection vector" (I think that's what they call it) for someone more vulnerable. I had a few little partymeeple things to tie up. But after that was sorted I was at a loose end. So I went and looked at the scrap wood pile out the back to see what was there. A gamer friend of ours has just got her self a nice inner city pad. So I thought I'd make a coffee table suitable for friends on cushions small game moments. Or just putting a libation on when your hands are busy.

Like being washed..

I feel some gamer cushions may be needed now?

Hello and welcome to the new decade.
plAy Some months back, Super Joss had a birthday (happy birthday Super Joss). I dig birthdays as it's a great time to get someone a surprisingly good gift. As I can be a bit irregular with gift giving, this is often where the good surprise is. I had known for some time that Super Joss had wanted a badge making machine. But she had totally forgotten telling me. So when I presented her with a medium sized box that was more than a handful of kilograms, She was even more surprised! After all the bolts and screws in the thing had settled into their respective homes, we needed an image to "badge".
Badge is a verb right?

So GIMPed away and came up with a simple board gaming motif. It could have been a rugby or sailing one. But I was in a board gaming mood.after a few badges had been made it occurred to me that it would be a fine design for a Tee Shirt. So that is what we have done...

Expect to see a limited run these on in the party meeple store for AU$20 a piece in the next few days. Yeah, yeah. If people like them we'll print some more. But for now consider it limited.

The stock of Castle Poker has landed and arrived at partymeeple HQ. Although there'll be an actual business launch in early 20220, folk who find this page and would like a copy of the game can head over to the store and we'll send one your way. Banishment and Cogz can also be had at the store.

Stock is on it's way.
ship

On December 12th, the ship above sailed though Fremantle heads with partymeeple's first stock. It's an exiting moment, so Joss and I headed down there with my DSLR to record the moment. It will take 3-5 days for the games to clear customs and red tape. So sadly Castle Poker will not be available at WABA DecemberCon. Doing this has been quite the learning process and I'd hoped we'd be in stock months ago. But you can't have everything

I'll do a news post once things are rolling about what is involved in getting stuff made over seas and shipped into Australia.

The lateness does not take the excitement away though. Big thanks to Lily at Hopesgame in China for being a patient and understanding liaison. I can recommend them.

Partymeeple has a new web site. Why is that?
Noisy Andrew, the Partymeeple enthusiasm officer, has designed board games since he was in his teenage years. In 9th grade he designed a very bad miniatures war game for his semester maths project. It got him a reasonable mark as nobody had seen Settlers of Catan or El Grande yet.

Since the mid Naughties, he's made his favorite designs free to print and play via his web site. A few people have even done this.

But he's always wondered if anyone would like his games if you could just go to a shop and buy one?

Over the past few years, Some of his friends have designed games and run crowd funding campaigns to finance them. They have done well. all of them properly backed and paid for. But the problem with crowd funding is you are always left with 500 plus games you do not know what to do with. Marketing and distribution is not every bodies idea of a good time. So Partymeeple was born. Partymeeple will market and distribute a carefully selected range of small, fun board and card games.

Remember to Play.
